OET for Doctors and Nurses: Grade Requirements for Registration
The oet for doctors and the oet for nurses are not the same paper, and the grades asked of them are not the same either, under the same national regulator, in the same country, in the same month. Anyone planning around a single remembered number is planning around the wrong one.
This page sets out what each body publishes, per sub-test, and where in a registration application the certificate is actually read.
How to read this sheet: Doctors and nurses face different bars, sometimes from the same regulator. Each row names the regulator that sets it, and the two professions are never merged into one figure.
OET for doctors: the medicine version and a flat bar
The oet for doctors carries two conditions rather than one in the United Kingdom, and the General Medical Council states both. The certificate must show that the medicine version of the test was taken, and that at least grade B was achieved in each testing area. Both halves matter: the version is a gate of its own, and the grade applies to all four areas without an averaging provision.
The flat bar has a planning consequence. Because no area is allowed to sit lower, there is no component a candidate can afford to leave weak, and preparation cannot be usefully weighted towards the areas that feel hardest at the cost of the others. The same regulator's IELTS requirement is shaped identically, at least 7.0 in each testing area — with an additional overall figure of 7.5 that the OET requirement has no equivalent for.
Writing is where the profession-specific design bites hardest for this group. The task is a document of referral, advice, or a letter of transfer or discharge, written for the candidate's own profession, and the speaking task is a role-play in that same field. For a practising doctor these are familiar acts in an unfamiliar language, which is a different problem from an unfamiliar act.
OET for nurses, and the one step down
The oet for nurses in the United Kingdom is read against a different shape. The Nursing and Midwifery Council accepts at least grade B, that is 350 or above, for reading, listening and speaking, and at least grade C+, that is 300 or above, for writing. Three areas at one level and one area a step below.
That single step is worth understanding rather than merely noting, because the regulator repeats it on the other test it accepts: at least 7 for reading, listening and speaking and at least 6.5 for writing on IELTS Academic. The pattern travels with the regulator across both examinations, which is fairly strong evidence that it reflects a judgement about the role rather than about either paper.
The same body also publishes what happens when an attempt lands unevenly. Scores from two sittings may be combined under stated conditions, and it gives a worked example of a combination it refuses, one where three areas are comfortable and listening falls below its floor in one sitting. Anyone at the oet for nurses stage with one weak component should read those conditions before booking a full resit.
Requirements belong to the regulator, not to the test
Two requirements, one certificate, two different answers. Set out plainly: for the oet for doctors the regulator asks grade B in every area and the medicine version; the nursing regulator asks grade B in three areas and C+ in writing. Neither figure is a property of the OET. The oet requirements for registration are written by whoever will read the result.
This generalises badly, which is the point. The Australian regulator accepts the test and states that changes to its minimum scores took effect on 23 April 2026, so a table copied from an article written in 2025 is now wrong about Australia while remaining right about the United Kingdom. Cambridge English names ECFMG, CGFNS and FMRAC among the other accepting bodies, each with its own standard.
The workable habit is to treat the requirement and the test as two separate lookups. Find the regulator's published minimum first, per sub-test, then book the sitting format that returns a result in time. Reversing that order is how candidates end up holding a valid certificate that does not meet the oet requirements for registration they actually need.
Where registration reads the certificate
A language result is one document in a longer registration file, and it is usually checked early. Because the turnaround differs by format — typically 6 days for the computer and at-home versions against 12 days for paper, the choice of sitting format can decide whether a registration application makes a given intake at all.
The result is also not the last language requirement in every jurisdiction. Where a regulator applies a validity period, a certificate obtained early in a long application can expire mid-process. The registration authority publishes that period; the test provider does not set it.
Common questions
Do doctors and nurses sit the same paper?
They sit the same Listening and Reading and different Writing and Speaking. The awarding body describes Listening as accessible to all candidates across all professions and Reading as drawn from a variety of healthcare professions; Writing and Speaking are specific to the candidate’s profession.
Which professions have their own version?
Twelve: Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, Dietetics, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Podiatry, Radiology, Occupational Therapy, Veterinary Science, Optometry and Speech Pathology.
Does the medicine version matter, or just the grade?
Both. The General Medical Council states that the certificate must show the medicine version of the test as well as at least grade B in each testing area. A strong result on the wrong version is not a shortcut.
Why is the writing bar lower for nurses?
That is the regulator’s decision rather than the test’s. The Nursing and Midwifery Council accepts grade C+ in writing while asking grade B in reading, listening and speaking, and mirrors the same one-step drop in its IELTS requirement.
How long does a result take to arrive?
The awarding body states results are typically available within 6 days for the OET Test on Computer and OET@Home, and within 12 days for the OET Test on Paper.
Is the OET accepted outside the United Kingdom?
Yes. Cambridge English names the NMC, GMC, AHPRA, ECFMG, CGFNS and FMRAC among the accepting bodies, and states there are more. Each sets its own minimum, so acceptance and requirement are two separate questions.
